1995 Kawasaki ZX-7R Muzzy World Superbike

This WSB started the 1995 season in the hands of Mr. Daytona Scott Russell , Scott raced the Muzzy superbike for a total of three events before jumping ship for a ride on the RGV500 Suzuki in Grand Prix when Kevin Schwantz retired, it was an opportunity Scott couldnt pass upon.

Russell’s mount fell into the hands of Anthony Gobert after a big crash which bent one of the frames on Goberts bikes. 1995 was Anthony’s first full season racing WSB, he was 20 years old with huge talent.

You can find The Go Show racing this bike on YouTube at Phillips Island where he toast’s the rear tire in the first race but wins the second race, he won on leg at Laguna Seca that year as well. Not too shabby for his first season riding against some of the fastest WSB riders in an era where Ducati’s were king.

Now we enter the 1996 season where Doug Chandler just finished the 1995 AMA superbike season on the factory VR1000 Harley Davidson, for 1996 Doug signed to race with Muzzy in the AMA series. Rob Muzzy wanted to get Doug some seat time prior to the Daytona 200 so they entered two races in the series Formula USA at Daytona. Formula USA was a series for privateers to compete against other privateers but factory supported bikes and riders stayed away, Formula USA had some interesting rules as well, there wasn’t a displacement limit which lead to Muzzy’s engine guru Gary Medley to build a couple of prototype gear driven cam motors with a displacement of 835cc. Actually Gary told me he built 3 but one blew up on the dyno.

At the Formula USA event Chandler won both races then the series owner Doug Gonda claimed the racer under F USA rules for a sum of $45k, Muzzy signed all the paperwork and handed over the one off racer. The claiming was to show F USA didn’t want pro riders or unobtainable superbikes to show up at their events and smoke the field.

Doug Gonda kept the Muzzy Superbike for over 20 years before selling to me.
